Of the Latinas participating in the labor force, 32.2% work in the service sector, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This percentage is significantly higher than that of white women, who fall at 20%. Conversely, Latinas are underrepresented in various other sectors of the labor force, particularly as business owners. However, Latina entrepreneurship has grown immensely since the start of the 21st century.

Before developing the AMIGAS adaptation, we conducted 3 focus groups with ethnically and culturally diverse Latina women to explore the factors that increased their HIV risks. We collected ethnographic data on their beliefs related to gender and social norms and sexual communication, as well as their knowledge and misconceptions concerning HIV.

It is possible that side effects related to appearance may be of particular concern for Latina women, as 75 percent say that looking their best is an important part of their culture, according to a Univision study on Latina attitudes and behaviors related to beauty. Another issue for Hispanic/Latina women is that they are less likely to receive appropriate and timely breast cancer treatment when compared to non-Hispanic white women.

Based on these data, the overall false positive rate is ~1.0 percent in the serological assay used for this study. ACNN studyconducted the same year, however, found that 53% of Latinas get pregnant in their teens, about twice the national average. This number, while not reflecting the hypersexuality of Latina teens, can be attributed to intersecting social issues of gender, race, class, immigrant status and education.

Situations like these are widespread, especially among households in which Black and Latina women live, according to Household Pulse Survey data. (See Figure 3.) Providers may also deliver interventions that they have developed on their own or with research partners.37 Ours was the first successful efficacy trial of a systematic linguistic and cultural adaptation of an evidence-based intervention for use with a diverse Latina population.
